Background of the Study

Burnout among healthcare workers is a growing concern, particularly in pediatric settings where the emotional and physical demands of the job are heightened. Pediatric nurses often face high workloads, caring for children with diverse medical needs, many of whom are critically ill or require long-term care. The increased workload can lead to emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment, all of which are key indicators of burnout (Garba & Aminu, 2024). In Bauchi State, where healthcare infrastructure is under pressure, pediatric nurses often work in challenging conditions, which could contribute to high levels of stress and burnout.

Research has shown that high workload is one of the primary contributors to burnout in healthcare workers, particularly nurses, leading to decreased job satisfaction, lower patient care quality, and increased turnover rates (Adebayo & Ahmad, 2023). For pediatric nurses, the added emotional toll of caring for vulnerable children can exacerbate feelings of stress and burnout, making it crucial to understand the impact of workload on nurse well-being. In Bauchi State, where staffing shortages and limited resources are common, the relationship between workload and burnout among pediatric nurses needs to be explored to inform strategies aimed at improving nurse retention, job satisfaction, and patient care.

This study will examine the correlation between pediatric nurses' workload and burnout levels in Bauchi State, aiming to identify factors that contribute to burnout and recommend solutions for improving working conditions in pediatric care settings.

Statement of the Problem

Pediatric nurses in Bauchi State often face overwhelming workloads, which may contribute to increased burnout levels. Despite the recognition of the negative impact of burnout on both healthcare workers and patient outcomes, there is limited research on how workload specifically correlates with burnout among pediatric nurses in the region. This study will address this gap by examining how workload affects nurse well-being and by identifying factors that contribute to burnout in pediatric nursing practice in Bauchi State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the correlation between pediatric nurses' workload and burnout levels in Bauchi State.

  2. To assess the impact of workload on job satisfaction and emotional exhaustion among pediatric nurses.

  3. To identify strategies that could reduce burnout and improve the well-being of pediatric nurses in Bauchi State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the relationship between pediatric nurses' workload and burnout levels in Bauchi State?

  2. How does workload influence job satisfaction and emotional exhaustion among pediatric nurses?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce burnout among pediatric nurses in Bauchi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant positive correlation between pediatric nurses' workload and burnout levels in Bauchi State.

  2. Higher workload is associated with lower job satisfaction and higher emotional exhaustion among pediatric nurses.

  3. Implementing strategies to reduce workload and improve working conditions will significantly reduce burnout levels among pediatric nurses in Bauchi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on pediatric nurses working in both public and private healthcare facilities in Bauchi State. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews to assess workload, burnout symptoms, and job satisfaction. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and the challenge of accurately measuring workload in a diverse set of healthcare settings.

Definitions of Terms

  • Workload: The total number of tasks, patients, and responsibilities assigned to pediatric nurses within a given time period.

  • Burnout: A state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a sense of reduced personal accomplishment.

  • Job Satisfaction: The level of contentment and fulfillment pediatric nurses feel regarding their work environment, roles, and rewards.

  • Emotional Exhaustion: The feeling of being drained and overwhelmed due to the emotional demands of the job, often associated with burnout.
